MLS Laser Therapy

MLS Laser Therapy for Foot and Heel Pain

MLS Laser Therapy in Calgary is available at Alberta Family Podiatry as a non-invasive treatment option for certain painful and inflammatory conditions of the foot and ankle. MLS (Multiwave Locked System) Laser Therapy uses specific wavelengths of light energy delivered to the affected tissue with the goal of reducing pain and inflammation and supporting the body’s natural healing processes.

At Alberta Family Podiatry, MLS Laser Therapy may be used on its own or as part of a broader treatment plan depending on the condition being treated. Whether laser therapy is appropriate for you depends on your diagnosis, the severity and duration of your symptoms, and other factors identified during your examination.

How MLS Laser Therapy Works

MLS Laser Therapy uses specific wavelengths of light energy that are delivered into the tissues of the foot or ankle. The light energy is absorbed by cells within the treatment area, producing a process known as photobiomodulation. This is intended to stimulate cellular activity involved in tissue repair while helping to reduce pain and inflammation.

At Alberta Family Podiatry, we use the Robotic M7 MLS® Therapy Laser, a Class IV high-power, non-thermal therapeutic laser system. Class IV technology allows higher levels of laser energy to be delivered than lower-power Class III laser systems. The M7 combines this higher-power capability with MLS technology, which synchronizes continuous 808 nm and pulsed 905 nm wavelengths while carefully controlling the delivery of laser energy.

The M7 also uses a robotic treatment head that automatically scans the treatment area and distributes laser energy evenly across the targeted tissue. Its computerized system automatically adjusts treatment parameters to help provide accurate and consistent energy delivery. A separate precision handpiece can also be used when a smaller or more specific area needs to be targeted.

This combination allows us to provide a highly controlled, non-invasive treatment without injections or surgery. The treatment does not rely on heating the tissue and can be customized according to the condition and area being treated.

What to Expect During MLS Laser Therapy

MLS Laser Therapy is performed during a regular clinic visit and is non-invasive. With the Robotic M7 MLS® Therapy Laser, the robotic treatment head is positioned over the affected area and automatically moves the laser across the treatment zone. For smaller or more specific areas, a handheld applicator may also be used.

Treatment is generally comfortable. Patients typically feel little or no sensation while the laser is being applied, and the treatment does not require injections or anesthesia. The M7 delivers therapeutic laser energy without producing the significant heating sensation associated with some other high-power laser systems.

Treatment times vary depending on the condition and area being treated. After treatment, patients can usually return to normal daily activities without downtime.

How Many MLS Laser Therapy Treatments Are Needed?

MLS Laser Therapy is typically provided as a series of treatments because the effects of therapy are cumulative. Rather than spacing treatments far apart, sessions are usually scheduled more frequently at the beginning of the treatment program and then gradually tapered as treatment progresses.

For acute conditions, we typically recommend approximately six to ten treatments, while chronic conditions may require approximately eight to twelve treatments. Each treatment generally takes between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on the condition and the size of the area being treated.

A typical treatment schedule may involve three sessions during the first week, followed by two sessions per week, with the frequency gradually reduced as treatment progresses. The exact number and timing of treatments can vary depending on the condition, how long it has been present, and how the patient responds to therapy.
