Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown Toenail Treatment in Calgary
An ingrown toenail can cause pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes infection- making it difficult to walk or wear shoes comfortably. At Alberta Family Podiatry, we provide assessment and treatment for ingrown toenails, from conservative care to minor in office procedures when needed.
Whether your symptoms are new or recurring—or you are concerned about a child’s painful toenail—we’ll identify what is causing the problem and recommend a treatment plan focused on relieving pain and helping prevent it from returning.
When to See a Podiatrist for an Ingrown Toenail
Early treatment can often relieve discomfort before the nail becomes more painful or infected. Book an appointment if you notice any of the following:
- Increasing pain, redness, swelling, or tenderness around the nail
- Drainage, bleeding, pus, or an unpleasant odor
- Difficulty walking, wearing shoes, or staying active comfortably
- An ingrown toenail that keeps returning or has not improved with home care
- Diabetes, poor circulation, nerve damage, or another condition that can affect healing
Permanent Treatment for Recurring Ingrown Toenails
For painful, infected, or recurring ingrown toenails, we offer a permanent partial nail procedure. After numbing the toe, we remove only the narrow edge causing the problem and treat its growth center to prevent that edge from growing back. This is a minimally invasive permanent treatment option with a high success rate.
What to Expect
Your procedure is completed in our clinic using local anesthetic to numb the toe. We remove the small section of nail causing the problem and treat the nail root to help prevent it from growing back.
You can go home after your appointment and will be given clear instructions for caring for the toe. Most people return to normal daily activities as comfort allows. High-impact activities and sports may need to wait about one week, depending on your comfort and healing.
Common Causes
- Nails cut too short or corners cut too far back
- Tight or poorly fitted footwear
- Injury to the nail
- Nauturally curved nails
Aftercare
We will give you clear instructions for caring for your toe after the procedure. Mild tenderness, redness, and drainage can occur while the toe heals.
Contact our office if pain, redness, swelling, or drainage is getting worse, or if you have any concerns during your recovery.
