How Custom Orthotics Work
Orthotics are custom-designed devices worn inside your shoes to support the feet, improve alignment, and help distribute pressure more evenly. By supporting the way your feet function when you stand and walk, custom orthotics can help reduce stress on the feet and lower extremities and improve overall comfort.
When your feet are not properly aligned, certain areas of the feet and legs may be placed under excessive stress with each step. This can contribute to problems such as arch and heel pain, as well as discomfort affecting the ankles, knees, hips, and lower back. Custom orthotics are designed to address these alignment and pressure issues by providing support where it is needed and helping guide the feet through a more efficient walking pattern.
Fitting Custom Orthotics
When you come to Alberta Family Podiatry for custom orthotics, we will start by doing an assessment of the feet. Then we will make a non-weight bearing, three dimensional cast or scan. These impressions will be sent to a lab for further assessment and manufacturing. Once completed, the orthotics are delivered to our Calgary foot clinic for a proper fitting into your shoes.
It will take a short period of time to break them in. You should start feeling the benefits of your custom orthotics within four to eight weeks. Remember that orthotics should be comfortable. If you cannot wear an orthotic due to discomfort or pain, alterations may have to be made to the insole not only for pain relief, but also to improve its overall effectiveness.
